What Is Weight Management ?

A slimming enthusiast must first of all know what body weight management is.  You must first maintain balanced diet and your daily calorie intake must equal your calorie consumption.  A change in body weight is a reflection of long term calorie imbalance in your body.  For example, if your calorie intake exceeds calorie consumption, excess calorie will be stored as fat deposits.  End result - overweight problem or obesity.

If you are... Your caloric balance status is...
Maintaining your weight "in balance." You are eating roughly the same number of calories that your body is using. Your weight will remain stable.
Gaining weight "in caloric excess." You are eating more calories than your body is using. You will store these extra calories as fat and you'll gain weight.
Losing weight "in caloric deficit." You are eating fewer calories than you are using. Your body is pulling from its fat storage cells for energy, so your weight is decreasing.

Understanding IDEAL BODY WEIGHT, OVERWEIGHT AND OBESITY

Body Mass Index (BMI)

Body Mass Index or BMI in short, is an index designed by WHO and promoted by health experts as a measure for a ideal body weight, taking into account the body weight and height of a person.  It is calculated as follows:

Calculating your ideal weight  :

Lower limit of the ideal body weight = 18.5 x Height (m) x Height (m)
Upper limit of the ideal body weight = 24.9 x Height (m) x Height (m)

  Reference for standard BMI

BMI Index
Degree of Obesity
Below 18.5
Underweight
18.5 – 24.9
Ideal Body Weight
25.0 – 29.9
Overweight
Above 30
Obesity

You are already overweight when your BMI is more than 24.9.  You should take care of your health or start a slimming program.

Waist to Hip Ratio  (WHR)

Another easy method to check for overweight is to measure your waist.  A value of above 90cm ( 35.5 inches ) for men and above 80cm ( 31 inches )  for ladies means you are overweight.  The waist to hip ratio is the waist measurement over the hip measurement, an indication of your body fat distribution.  When the WHR exceeds 0.95 for men or 0.85 for ladies, the risk of chronic diseases like cardiovascular diseases, hypertension, atherosclerosis, diabetes, hypercholesterolemia etc is real.

WHR = Waist Measurement (cm)  /  Hip Measurement (cm)

WHR
